  S The stream contains the State's highest waterfall, the 420 foot Akaka Falls within Akaka Falls State Park. The stream corridor in this area passes through a lush rain forest containing several varieties of orchids. Other waterfalls also are located on the main stem and side tributaries. Kolokole Beach Park is located at the mouth.

The upper drainage flows through wild rain forest containing nearly all native flora. Lumahai Beach is very popular both with residents and tourists and is one of the most photographed spots on Kauai.

  S, R The longest and largest river in the State, the Wailuku rises on the slopes of Mauna Kea at the 10,800 foot elevation and descends to sea level in 26 miles. There are several waterfalls, the most notable of which are Rainbow Falls and the Boiling Pots (a series of small falls and pools). Hunting for wild game is reknowned in the upper and middle reaches. The lower river is used for swimming and tubing.
