Sharpsburg Lutheran Chuch

This image shows the heavily damaged Lutheran Chuch on the east side of Sharpsburg. The church, which was built in 1768, was hit repeatedly by Union artillery and torn down after the battle.

The Middle Bridge

The Middle Bridge over Antietam Creek has been replaced with a modern highway bridge. It is located on Rt. 34 as you enter the park from Boonsboro.

Destroyed Mumma Farm

Probably no other family in the community suffered more than the Mumma family. They escaped the battle, only to return to find their farm totally destroyed by a fire set by Confederate soldiers. The Mummas rebuilt the farm about one year later and today the farm has being restored again by the National Park Service.

Roulette Farm

Another prominent family on the battlefield were the Roulettes who's farm was located on the north side of Bloody Lane. Thousands of Union soldiers marched on their farm as they moved south to attack the Confederate's in the road. After the battle 700 men were buried on their farm. It is difficult to make out in the photo, but just in front of the house are the tumbled Roulette family beehives. When the 132nd Pennsylvania Infantry marched past the house, an artillery shell knocked over the hives. The Pennsylvanians were swarmed by lead bullets and angry bees.

Sherrick Farm

The Sherrick Farm is on the south end of the battlefield near the Burnside Bridge.

Union Signal Station

This Union signal station was located on Elk Ridge, the first range of mountains about two miles east of the battlefield. From this vantage point over 500 feet higher than the battlefield, signalmen could see and communicate at great distances using telescopes and waving flags.

Reel Barn

Gardner captured more local devastation in this image of the destroyed barn owned by the Reel family. The farm is just west of the battlefield and the barn suffered a direct hit from Union artillery, caught fire and burned. Sadly, at the time it was struck the barn was serving as a Confederate field hospital.

Pry Farm

Phillip Pry's prosperous farm and home was taken over by Union commander George McClellan to use as his headquarters during the battle. Afterward, General Israel Richardson, who was wounded in the action at Bloody Lane, was taken to the Pry House where he died in an upstairs bedroom on November 3rd. President Lincoln visited the Pry house to see the wounded Richardson during his four day visit in early October.
