Female Promethea Moth. The Promethea moth or Spicebush Silkmoth, Callosamia promethea, differs by gender in several ways. The female promethea's body is larger than the male's body. Her body and wings are reddish brown; the male's body and wings are brownish black. The discal spots on the wings are absent on males, or nearly so. The male’s wings are also more slender and tapered.
The genders not only differ physically, they are also active at different times. The females fly at night while the males are active in late afternoon.
