Burnside Bridge

This view of the Burnside Bridge is taken from the west bank of Antietam Creek. The small monument on the right corner of the bridge is to the 51st Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. This monument was moved off of the bridge in 1964 and is now located just to the east.

Cornfield Avenue

The War Department built Cornfield Avenue in the 1890s. This view is looking east.

Hagerstown Pike

This view is looking south along the Hagerstown Turnpike. Just to the left, on the other side of the fence, is the famous "Cornfield." Union soldiers marched right down this road, and on both sides of it, to open this battle. The cannon represents Battery B, 4th US Artillery that was assigned to the "Iron Brigade" that marched down this road. The condition of the Turnpike is much closer to the Civil War period than todays wider and paved roadway.

This image is looking south, down the Hagerstown Turnpike toward the Dunker Church. Notice the other structures in the background that are now gone. The condition of the Turnpike is much closer to the Civil War period than todays wider and paved roadway.

This image was taken in the front yard of the Dunker Church looking north-northeast at the intersection of the Hagerstown Turnpike and the Smoketown Road.

Mansfield Avenue

This view is looking east along the tour road on the north end of the battlefield. The gentleman in the photo is pointing north toward the Joseph Poffenberger farm. It was on this farm that the Union First Corp under General Hooker camped the night before the battle and began their advance the next morning to open the battle. The Joseph Poffenberger farm was just recently acquired by the park.

The Maryland Monument

Maryland Monument which was dedicated in 1900. Notice the newly planted trees. This view is looking northeast, parallel to the Smoketown Road

This image is looking east at the 12th Pennsylvania Cavalry Monument which was erected in 1904.

Sherrick and Otto Farms

This view is looking southeast. That is the Sherrick Farm on the left and the Otto Farm on the right. The ground behind the Otto Farm is where General Burnside's Ninth Corp advanced after capturing the Burnside Bridge.

War Department Tower

This view of the observation tower at Bloody Lane is looking northwest. This image is after 1896 when the tower was built and before the roof was added.

The West Woods

This image is taken from the front yard of the Dunker Church looking north up the Hagerstown Turnpike. All of the area to the left or west side of the Turnpike was heavily wooded during the battle and known as the West Woods.
