Sensory Discovery Hike and Activities
-
Pre-school to Kindergarten
-
Students will use their sense of sight, hearing, touch, and smell to explore and experience the world around them. By taking a Discovery Hike on the Beech Springs Nature Trail, students will learn more about the forest by keeping their eyes and ears open for different colors, sounds and shapes.
-
Habitats and Wildlife of the Natchez Trace Parkway
-
Kindergarten to Third Grade
-
Students will join a ranger for a guided habitat hike on the Beech Springs Nature Trail. While exploring a forest ecosystem, students will be on the lookout for animals in their natural habitat. While real animals can be hard to find, signs of wildlife are everywhere, and students will be challenged to find as much evidence as they can. Students will also have a chance to participate in a hands-on program using skins and skulls. A live corn snake may be available for this program. The Skins and Skulls program (including the corn snake) is also available for classroom presentations.
-
Travel on the Old Trace
-
Third to Fifth Grade
- Students will have a chance to learn about early travelers of the Natchez Trace from the American Indians to the Kaintucks through this outdoor program. A hands-on demonstration will give students a better idea how the boatmen overcame obstacles by learning what they carried on the journey.
