The National Mall and monumental core parks were established at the same time the Nation's Capital was founded in the period 1790-1792. This oldest collection of national park areas, along with dozens of historic sites, natural areas, and Civil War battlefields comprise today's National Capital Region of the National Park Service.

There is no national memorial to veterans of World War I in the National Mall and Memorial Parks. However, the District of Columbia erected the D.C. War Memorial to honor its sons who died in service in World War I. The memorial and the grounds were restored in 2011.
