Capital improvement projects at the park, including rehabilitations as well as new memorials, result in construction zones. NPS design and construction projects follow guiding principles for sustainable development at federal facilities, including use of energy efficient lighting, natural light, best management practices for erosion and sedimentation control, and stormwater design that captures most or all rainwater to keep nutrients and sediments from entering the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay.
Did You Know?
There is no national memorial to veterans of World War I in the National Mall and Memorial Parks. However, the District of Columbia erected the D.C. War Memorial to honor its sons who died in service in World War I. The memorial and the grounds were restored in 2011.
