Three
rotating photographs depict:
1) The steep ridges of the Appalachian Highlands presented a challenge
to the fragile automobiles of early Lincoln Highway travelers, creating
a unique opportunity to entrepreneurs who set up ridge-top, one-stop
service centers that provided food, gas, lodging, water, scenic views
and diversion to motorists struggling to cross the mountains. The
most famous of these ridge-top one stops was the SS Grandview, opened
as a ship-shaped hotel perched atop Allegheny Ridge in 1932. Tragically,
this important roadside resource burned in November 2001. Photo
