In 1988 and 1989 comprehensive documentation of twenty-two rock art
in Dinosaur National Monument was undertaken to establish baseline
information for the long-term monitoring of these sites. Procedures used
included still photography, scale drawings, video photography,
photogrammetry, and standardized written descriptions.
Documentation for each site was compiled in a notebook format for use by
park personnel during monitoring phases. Analyses of the rock art and the
kinds of situations in which they are placed suggest that the images
were used to influence the behavior of aboriginal visitors to the site.
