Hopeton
Earthworks is a vast site that
covers more than 200 acres (81 hectares).
The site is located on an alluvial terrace
on the east side of the Scioto River. Investigations
have focused on the southern portion of
the earthworks. This area is generally known
as the “square” (Squier and
Davis 1848;Thomas 1894). The area is located
immediately south of a farm road and measures
approximately 300 m east-west and 100 m
north-south.
Ongoing work at Hopeton
represents cooperative efforts of many individuals
and several different institutions. This
long-term study is geared toward a number
of goals, including achieving a basic understanding
of the chronology, structure and function
of the earthwork; the information upon which
investigations of lifeways and interaction
must be built. |

Topographical Analysis |
|
Participants incorporate several
approaches to the record at Hopeton. Geophysical
surveys of investigated areas provide an
initial perspective of potential subsurface
features and earthwork wall structure. Various
subsurface investigations follow, based
upon results of these surveys. Topographic
mapping has also provided another perspective
of the site, giving researchers a means
of comparison with other data sets and insight
into processes of site degradation. Click

and excavation-based investigation. NEXT
