  • Foggy Road Conditions

    Adverse weather may cause delays on roads leading to Muir Woods. See Mill Valley on 511.org for traffic info. In heavy fog, use low-beam headlights. Tail-lights will be visible to drivers behind you.

  • Dipsea Foot Bridge at the Annex Lot is BACK!

    The Dipsea foot bridge at the Annex Lot is back in place. Thanks to all who took the Deer Park Fire Road detour. Taking those extra steps helped to protect Redwood Creek and the endangered juvenile coho.

  • State Route 1 (Shoreline Highway) Now Clear for 2-Lane Traffic

    State Route 1 (Shoreline Highway) road work between West California and Erica Way was completed before Memorial Day weekend. This section of road is now clear for 2-lane traffic.

A Tree Lover's Monument

When John Muir learned that William and Elizabeth Kent were naming a redwood forest near San Francisco in his honor, he declared, "This is the best tree-lovers monument that could possibly be found in all the forests of the world." The couple had purchased the land to preserve its beauty and restful wilderness; and in 1908, they donated it to the federal governent to protect it from destruction.

President Theodore Roosevelt declared Muir Woods the 10th national monument on January 9, 1908.  The first one donated by private individuals William and Elizabeth Kent.
