Horse Collar
c 1875-1900
This horse necklace or collar is sometimes called a martingale. It is made from buffalo hide and covered with red wool trade cloth. The neck strips are edged in dark blue trade cloth and decorated with glass trade beads and silver button tacks. The center panel is decorated with glass beads and silver “hawk” bells hang from the lower edge. Hawk bells also hung from split ends of the neck strips.
