Hat
Cayuse
Pre 1847
This litsk-ow or twined basket hat was collected by Marcus Whitman, missionary among the Cayuse Indians. Whitman sent it to Dr. Dudley Allen in Ohio. This is the same Dr. Allen who received Indian articles from Henry Spalding. This hat is made of Indian hemp (Apocynum cannabinum) warp foundation and weft, wrapped around with filament of both natural and dyed beargrass (Xerophyllum tenax). The basket hats in the museum's collection are among the oldest known examples of this popular style of hat.
