Crystal City banner From November, 1942 to November, 1947, Crystal City, Texas, was home to the largest internment camp administered by the Department of Justice's Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS). Two thirds of the 4,000 prisoners were Japanese Americans; the remaining third were of German and Italian descent. In addition, there were approximately a thousand Japanese Latin American prisoners, forcibly removed from their homes and brought to the United States for a prisoner-of-war exchange with Japan. After the war ended, the Peruvian government denied the Japanese Peruvians re-entry. They remained in legal limbo until finally being allowed to stay in the United States. Canvas.
