Hiking Sticks

1940s
Manazanar, CA
Made by Matsunoske Wakamatsu

As time wore on, and the United States gained strength in the Pacific, security restrictions at Manzanar loosened. Some internees were then able to explore the nearby scenic wonders of the Eastern Sierra, some of the most breathtaking hiking country in the nation. They used some of the hiking sticks carved at Manzanar.
