Manzanar High School Annual Commencement Program

June 18, 1944

Uprooted from their pre-war high schools and unable to attend their graduations outside of camp, Japanese Americans celebrated this adolescent rite of passage at commencement ceremonies held in the camp auditorium in June, 1944 and 1945. To give the event a sense of normalcy, the Education Department rented caps and gowns, the Principal and Superintendent of Education gave speeches and the students staged a prom.
