Old State Capitol, wholesale store on corner. By the 1850s, Springfield was growing city, the capital of Illinois, and boasted a bustling downtown square built around the Capitol building.  Lincoln and eight political friends from Sangamon County were credited with bringing the capital to Springfield from Vandalia in southern Illinois.  Because the gentlemen were all over 6 feet tall, they were called the “Long Nine.”
