Silver thread and wire tassel, ball top and center, crocheted wire tassles.

Lincoln’s assassination in April 1865 shocked the nation.  Once Mary’s wish to have Lincoln buried in Springfield was known, the city set out to create an elaborate viewing area for the coffin in Representative’s Hall at the Illinois Capitol.  Crepe, velvet and numerous silver tassels covered the catafalque (coffin platform) including this tassel.
