These single stem candle holders show a scene from the popular mid-1800s French story, “Paul & Virginia” about a shipwrecked young couple that fall in love before being separated when they are found. The reference to a well-known French story would display Mary’s knowledge of the French language and her interest in literature besides the practical use of providing light to the room.
