This portrait is of Ya-otza Beg-ay, also known as “Miguelito”, a name given by J.L. Hubbell. He worked for the Hubbell family in Ganado and the Fred Harvey Co. at Grand Canyon, AZ and Albuquerque, NM. Originally from Salina Spring, AZ, Miguelito frequently attended the poker games at Hubbell Trading Post. J.L. Hubbell introduced him to Maria Antonio who became his wife. He was a medicine man who specialized in a variety of sings, including the nine night Yé’ii bicheii ceremony. He was a good friend and working partner of Dr. Clarence Salisbury of Ganado, who was known as ‘Azee’ííl’íní Tsoh [Big Doctor]. Conte crayon on paper.
