		Truman wrote his memoirs and devoted himself to building a library to house his official and personal papers. "Every piece of paper a president signs," he declared, "... has to be saved." He was keenly involved in all aspects of the library, including exhibit design and docent training. Truman wanted this library to be about the presidency, not about him. His love of learning and belief in the American people found a lasting memorial in the Truman Library.

	Secret Service protection was provided for retired presidents only after Kennedy's assassination in 1963. The Trumans did not want that invasion to their privacy. After a personal call from President Johnson, the Trumans finally relented. It was common to see the Secret Service accompany Truman during his walks around Independence.
