In 1864, Eliza "Didy" Ridgely White (1828-1894) took her extended family to Newport, Rhode Island for the summer, where they stayed at the Bruen Villa on Bellevue Avenue. Several family members and their servants are seen on the porch in this photo, among them family companion Mary Evans, John Ridgely (1851-1938), Didy’s father-in-law Henry White I (1794-1882), Eliza Ridgely III (1858-1954), an unidentified African-American butler, Henry White II (1850-1927), Charles Ridgely (1853-1873), and Julian Leroy White (1853-1923).
