Henry White II (1850-1927), eldest grandson of John and Eliza Ridgely, accompanied by his mother Eliza “Didy” Ridgely White and brother Julian White visited to Florence, Italy in the winter of 1857-58. A group of three statues, the first of several pieces of statuary ordered by Didy, were commissioned from Pasquale Romanelli (1812-1887), a leading sculptor in the city. This portrait of Henry shows him attired in neoclassical garb with a greyhound at his side. Henry later became a prominent diplomat, serving as ambassador to both Italy and France.
