This formal portrait of William H. Buckler (1867-1953), Eliza "Didy" Ridgely White Buckler’s (1828-1894) youngest child, has always been referred to by the child’s family nickname, "Little Willie." His father was Didy’s second husband, Dr. Thomas Hepburn Buckler, whom she married in 1866. The portrait of Little Willie was likely painted in France, where the family resided at that period and for many years thereafter. Little Willie grew up to be a noted diplomat and a respected classical archeologist.
