A family friend of the Ridgelys who was traveling with them in Europe in the early 1870s, the girl in this portrait was painted in Paris by expatriate artist and engraver Thomas B. Welch (1814-1874). The artist also completed a companion portrait of Margaretta Sophia Ridgely (1869-1949), the youngest child of Charles and Margaretta Howard Ridgely who was known in the family as Margy.
