This lavishly illustrated guide to Italy was a Christmas gift to Eliza E. Ridgely from her uncle O.W. Eichelberger in 1851. He may have given it to her to remind her of her two previous visits to Italy in 1834 and 1847 or in anticipation of her upcoming trip to Europe in summer of 1852. Many of Eliza’s books reflect her great interest in foreign travel, history, and culture.
