Wing Wardrobe

This large piece of bedchamber furniture probably held a sizeable amount of bed linens, curtains, quilts, coverlets, and the like in its commodious center section. The sides or wing compartments have hanging space for clothing. The design of this wing wardrobe, one that was favored in Baltimore, is based on Plate 3 of Thomas Shearer’s illustrations for The Cabinet-Maker’s London Book of Prices (1788, 1793). Leading Baltimore cabinetmaker William Camp, who owned a copy of this book, may have made this wardrobe. Other examples of his work also feature the lavish use of West Indian satinwood.
