The design of the ornate hot water urn-on-stand is based on an English Rococo example which descended in the family of Mrs. Harry Dorsey Gough (Prudence Carnan) of Perry Hall, John Ridgely’s aunt. The Hampton urn was likely made by Baltimore’s most renowned silversmith, Samuel Kirk, at the time of John’s marriage to Eliza Ridgely in 1828.
