Scythe
c 1880-1900
From handheld cradle scythes of Grant’s day to modern swathers, cutting hay is a part of the ranch since its earliest time. In the open range era, cattlemen of Western Montana raised winter feed for their cattle. This differed from Eastern Montana where cattle were left to fend for themselves on the grasses of the wide-open plains.
