Pommel Bag with Holster
1890
In the 1860s, miners paid in gold for the beef in Kohrs' butcher shops. Kohrs carried the gold and a pistol in a built-in holster in these pommel bags. Similar to saddle bags, they were set over the saddle horn. Once when he was pursued by robbers, Kohrs lightened the load on his horse by leaving his blankets, overcoat, belt and pistol behind.
