The Hartford Calendar
1885

April 16, 1885 was the 23rd anniversary of the emancipation of slaves in the District of Columbia. Over 5,000 people participated in the parade near the White House. President Grover Cleveland and his cabinet reviewed the parade. That evening Douglass gave a major speech, 'we are confronted by a new administration' at the Lincoln Memorial Congregational Church.
