Eisenhower's service as commander of a training camp during World War I was an important early assignment. Camp Colt, Gettysburg, PA., was named after Samuel Colt, the inventor of the famous six-shot revolver. The camp was established in March 1918 to provide training to recruits of the Army’s new Tank Corps. It was Eisenhower first independent command. Two British officers familiar with tank warfare served as advisers at the camp. This was Eisenhower’s first experience of working with Allies.
