Clara Barton received this invitation contributions during the Civil War. The ball was held March 6, 1865 on the top floor of the Patent Office Building. It was in very building where Barton had worked as a clerk during the 1850s. Although she and Lincoln never met, he was familiar with her work and put her in charge of the Office of Correspondence of Missing Men in Army in 1865.
