It is believed that the Grand Duchess Louise of Baden, Germany, gave Clara Barton this settee for her work during the Franco-Prussia War.  Barton worked under the Duchess' sponsorship for the German Red Cross.  She organized relief and established sewing factories to provide clothing for the needy and employment for women.
