Edward Steichen, brother of Lilian Steichen Sandburg was vibrant, intelligent, and talented. He helped establish photography as art in America. Steichen defined American culture with his celebrity portraits of the 1920s and 1930s and documented the human drama of World War II. Together, he and Carl Sandburg produced the Family of Man photography exhibit. Steichen and Sandburg were in-laws and kindred spirits.
