Spanish American War Medal
One of several medals in honor of Carl Sandburg’s service in the Spanish-American War of 1898. His company was sent to Puerto Rico and although he did not see combat, the conditions were such that survival was not guaranteed. This military service opened a door for Sandburg to attend college. His life changed forever. (Niven, p 39-43)
