Luxemburg 1835
Like so many other Americans of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, both Carl Sandburg and his wife Lilian "Paula" Steichen Sandburg were first-generation Americans. Mary Kemp and Jean Pierre Steichen emigrated from Luxemburg to the United States. Edward Steichen, Lilian "Paula" Steichen's older brother was born in Luxemburg and emigrated to America with his mother when he was 18-months old. His sister Lilian, was born in Wisconsin three and a half years later.
