A tabloid newspaper in Chicago called The Day Book was one of Sandburg's earliest reporting experiences. It was a paper with a strong sense of social justice which suited the young Sandburg. Almost all of Sandburg's pre-1925 writings were related to social issues, labor disputes, and worker's rights. Many of his early poems were directly related to the news stories he was covering for The Day Book.
