Researching the life of Abraham Lincoln brought Sandburg into the turmoil of America's Civil War. He learned of strategy for battles won and lost; he discovered the realities of an infantry soldier's life on both sides of the battlefield; he learned of the struggles of those loved ones left to fend for themselves at home and the anguish of those awaiting word of a safe return or the ultimate sacrifice of their loved one at war.
