Wastebasket
It was so important to Mrs. Sandburg to ensure the home of her husband Carl Sandburg was preserved for the perpetuation of his legacy, his gifts to the world, and to the promotion of writing and independent thought, that she gave to the National Park Service the home where they lived the last 22 years of his life and its contents virtually in tact. A gift so intact that even the contents of the wastebasket were among what was left to the National Park Service.
