Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Seal Medal

Although Sandburg  identified himself as a political independent, he supported and became personal aquaintances of several presidents, including Truman, Franklin Roosevelt, Kennedy and Johnson.

Political involvement either by way of poetry or prose was not unfamiliar for Sandburg. Although he identified himself as a political independent, he supported and became personal aquaintances of several presidents, including Truman, Franklin Roosevelt, Kennedy and Johnson. In a letter written to New Republic editor Bruce Bliven he gave free permission for his support of FDR to be used in any way... "In the present national chaos and international entanglements, considering the amount of combustibles lying loose every way for Sunday, I'll take Roosevelt." (p 515, Niven)
