Tuff Cliffs with Cavates
c 1934
Photograph by George A. Grant
The cliffs in Frijoles Canyon are tuff - compacted volcanic ash. The people took advantage of the soft stone, carving out rooms, called cavates, and then building houses in front of them. The small holes supported the houses’ roof beams.
