Uncle Joe
1861-1865

An elderly servant sits in the doorway of the north servants quarter. This photograph was donated by the daughter of a Union soldier who was at Arlington House during the Civil War. The soldier identified the man in the photograph as "Uncle Joe,” one of the Arlington slaves who refused to leave the home when it was confiscated. The soldier told his daughter that he became close friends with Uncle Joe and thought highly of him.
