Alcatraz Girls on a Cannon—Agave trail
Early 1940s
Teenage daughters of Alcatraz correctional officers pose on the barrel of a cannon on the Agave Trail that was left over from the days when Alcatraz was a military fortress. The young ladies lived on the island in apartment houses and cottages maintained for staff members and their families. During World War II, most of the surplus 19th century cannon and cannon balls were used for scrap.
