The opening story of Hutchings' California Magazine described the early exploration of Yosemite Valley, and included engravings made from the Thomas Ayres drawings from the year before. The magazine was created by James Hutchings as part of his effort to promote tourism in California, and specifically to Yosemite Valley. Hutchings would later take up residence in Yosemite Valley, and hosted thousands of tourists at his hotel there.
