All organisms need a habitat with food, water, shelter, and space to live in order to survive. For example, the American Beaver eats the bark of trees, uses lakes and ponds for water, builds shelter by felling trees to form dams, and can be found in the low-elevation forest of Mount Rainier National Park.

Overview: All life depends on a habitat's food, water, shelter, and space to live. In this game, students ensure the survival of an animal by gathering these components and who ever saves the most animals wins. Student created cards will be used to play Gin-Rummy and familiarize students with the different components of a habitat needed for an organism to survive on Mount Rainier.
Grade Level:
 6 - 12
Objectives: Identify components of habitat as food, water, shelter, and space in a suitable arrangement.

Apply knowledge of these components to habitat requirements for species at Mount Rainier.

Did You Know?

Gobblers Knob fire lookout.

In the early 1930s the Civilian Conservation Corp constructed fire lookouts throughout the park to help protect the surrounding area from fire. Four historic lookouts still remain in the Mount Rainier National Historic Landmark District including Tolmie, Shriner, Fremont, and Gobblers Knob.
