Author and National Park volunteer Gail Stephens will provide a FREE lecture about the last major Confederate invasion into Maryland. In July 1864, Lieutenant General Jubal Early led a large veteran army into Maryland with the goal of capturing the United States capital and breaking the Union hold on Robert E. Lee’s army near Petersburg. Was his campaign successful? Was General Lee pleased with the results? These, and other issues, will be discussed in the program.
Gail Stephens has volunteered at Monocacy National Battlefield for ten years, conducting extensive research and providing numerous tours and interpretive programs throughout the United States. Her articles have been published in several notable magazines and she recently completed writing The Shadow of Shiloh: General Lew Wallace and the Civil War, which will be published later this year.
This FREE program will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 8, 2009 at the Gambrill Mill, 4801 Urbana Pike, Frederick, Maryland.
A short preview of The National Parks: America’s Best Idea by Ken Burns will be shown prior to the lecture.
