Natural Features & Ecosystems

Several turtles sun themselves on a log sticking out of a pond.
While Monocacy National Battlefield was established to protect the historic features associated with the Civil War battle that occurred here, it also protects habitats for native plants and animals.

NPS/Etter

As the area surrounding the battlefield grows and encroaches on the borders of the park, concern grows for the protection, preservation and conservation of its natural resources. Monocacy National Battlefield protects the history of the Civil war battle and the natural areas found in the park. There are creeks, fields, third growth forests, historical houses, and terrestrial and aquatic life that must be managed for the protection and enjoyment of present and future generations.
