Monocacy Junction, Retreat Over the Railroad Bridge

3:30 p.m. Monocacy Junction During the third attack on the Thomas Farm, Ramseur’s troops attacked the junction. Davis was able to hold off the Confederate attackers for nearly an hour until his detachment was greatly reduced. Union Brigadier General Erastus Tyler ordered the 1st Maryland Potomac Home Brigade to burn the blockhouse and fall back to the railroad bridge to assist in holding another position. Meanwhile, the Confederates increased the size of their attacking force and overwhelmed Davis’ troops. He then gave the order to retreat over the railroad bridge.

Union Retreat

4:30 p.m.  The Union defense had fallen back on the Thomas Farm but had managed to stall the Confederate attack when Terry detached half of his brigade, swept down by the river, then hit the weakened and exposed Union right flank (1). Wallace ordered his force, low on ammunition, to retreat. The order reached the right flank just as it began to crumble. The Union troops retreated in the direction of Gambrill Mill and made their way back to Baltimore (2). Their defense succeeded in delaying Early’s army for a full day, forcing the Confederates to camp on the battlefield until the following morning.
