September 24 -26, 2007
Presented by the National Park Service – Mississippi National River and Recreation Area with support from Embrace Open Space
This workshop will offer both classroom and field sessions on the science of visual analysis and on protecting and managing important views. The workshop begins with a half-day classroom session on the afternoon of September 24, 2007, followed by four half day field sessions of 15 participants each (for a maximum of 60 participants). This workshop is for anyone interested in learning a basic vocabulary for scenic quality and will help participants begin to develop a strategy for protecting scenic resources in their community. Learn what scenery and visual resources are, how to identify and measure important views, and how to manage them to create a desired condition. An award-winning process transferable to any important viewshed, and pioneered at the Blue Ridge Parkway, will be presented using the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area (MNRRA) corridor as its context. When implemented, this process will help provide baseline data on quintessential scenic resource values and a means to foster local support for protecting views that contribute to area integrity and local economies. Participants will gain an understanding of views, how they are composed, what makes them scenic, and how that influences management options. The classroom session includes an overview of the visual analysis process followed by the field session to apply that science to specific views.
Four identical field sessions will take place along or near the Mississippi River that will apply the visual analysis process to 4- 5 specific views in the MNRRA corridor. There is a maximum of 15 participants per field session. Participants must select their field session at time of registration and transportation will be provided to and from the sites.
The workshop is free but registration is required by September 14, 2007. For additional information call Susan Overson at 651-290-3030 ext 225.
